Case Overview


On February 27, 2025, housing proctor (i.e., resident assistant) Anthony Alvarez  to the media criticizing housing policy changes and discussing his personal residence hall experiences.  On March 13, he was  for speaking with the media instead of forwarding media requests to his supervisor, and was subsequently terminated for other policy violations. Âé¶¹´«Ã½IOS critical of the same housing policy changes as Alvarez  their windows with messages protesting the changes. This violated a housing policy forbidding outward-facing decorations, and the students received conduct charges for these postings. On May 23, Âé¶¹´«Ã½IOS wrote KU explaining that the First Amendment protects expressive activity and media commentary and demanding KU revise these policies and drop policy-related conduct charges against those disciplined.
