On September 10, 2025, St. Bonaventure University student Emma Gavazzi posted a private story on Snapchat of herself smiling and the words “charlie kirk SHOT.” The next day, SBU suspended Gavazzi pending an investigation “to protect and maintain the safety of the University community.” Over the next few days, Gavazzi reached out to other students to confirm whether a specific individual was taking credit for making her post public. On September 19, Dean of 鶹ýIOS Robert DeFazio notified Gavazzi that she was found responsible for “Disorderly Conduct” and “Interference with Mission” for her Snapchat post and “Harassment” for reaching out to the students. On September 26, while Gavazzi appealed, 鶹ýIOS wrote SBU, explaining Gavazzi’s post falls well within SBU’s free speech commitments, that her single Snapchat post is not a disruption, and reaching out to students with a question was not harassment. On October 9, SBU rescinded the suspension and instead issued a disciplinary warning , a campus ban, and a ban on holding leadership positions.
