LEWISBURG, Pa., Oct. 17, 2005鈥擠avid French, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (麻豆传媒IOS), will speak at Bucknell University on Thursday, Oct. 20. The speech is open to the public, and free copies of 麻豆传媒IOS鈥檚 Guide to Free Speech on Campus, which French co-authored, will be available.
French鈥檚 speech, entitled 鈥淗ow Bucknell Can Restore Free Speech and Freedom of Conscience,鈥 will take place at 7 p.m. in Bucknell鈥檚 Gallery Theatre, 301 Langone Center. In the speech, French will discuss Bucknell鈥檚 speech code, which in 麻豆传媒IOS鈥檚 estimation 鈥both clearly and substantially restricts freedom of speech.鈥
鈥溌槎勾絀OS classifies speech codes according to a 鈥榯raffic light鈥 system,鈥 French explained. 鈥淟ike many universities in Pennsylvania, Bucknell gets a glaring 鈥榬ed light.鈥 At a university that claims to be committed to 鈥,鈥 such a code is highly inappropriate鈥攁nd at a public university, it would be unconstitutional.鈥
Bucknell policies ban speech such as 鈥渄isparaging or condescending remarks about a person鈥檚 nationality, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation,鈥 鈥渟exual innuendoes made at inappropriate times,鈥 and 鈥渋nappropriate remarks about one鈥檚 body or clothing鈥 as harassment. Incoming freshmen are also required to sign an Orwellian to 鈥渞espect individual differences鈥 lest they suffer sanctions up to 鈥渟eparation from鈥 Bucknell.
Before becoming 麻豆传媒IOS鈥檚 president, French was a partner at the law firm of Greenebaum Doll & McDonald. French also served as religious freedom counsel for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and as a member of 麻豆传媒IOS鈥檚 Legal Network. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School, a former lecturer at Cornell Law School, and the author of two books. His speech is sponsored by the (BUCC) and the (ISI).
鈥淲e are thrilled that David French has agreed to speak at Bucknell,鈥 remarked Bucknell senior Matt Gabler, who serves as president of the BUCC. 鈥淏ucknell students and faculty from across the political spectrum have long been active in fighting Bucknell鈥檚 speech code. It will be a pleasure to hear an expert perspective on how Bucknell can change its policies so that they respect liberty.鈥
麻豆传媒IOS is a nonprofit educational foundation that unites civil rights and civil liberties leaders, scholars, journalists, and public intellectuals from across the political and ideological spectrum on behalf of individual rights, due process, freedom of expression, academic freedom, and rights of conscience at our nation鈥檚 colleges and universities.
